The objective of this research is to construct a simple bootstrap (SB) prediction interval following a unit root test for autoregressive processes by the bootstrap method proposed by Cai and Daives (2012) and to compare the coverage probability and expected length of a SB prediction interval with those of a bootstrap prediction interval proposed by Thombs and Schucany (TS) (1990). This research used the Monte Carlo simulation method. Results of the research are as follows: The first-order autoregressive process (AR(1) process) The one-, two- and three-step-ahead SB prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals when the sample sizes are small ( = 25 and 50) for all random error distributions studied. In case of moderate and large sample sizes ( = 100 and 250), the two- and three-step-ahead SB prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals for all random error distributions studied. The second-order autoregressive process (AR(2) process) The one-, two- and three-step-ahead SB prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals when the sample sizes are small ( = 25 and/or 50) for all random error distributions studied. In case of moderate and large sample sizes ( = 100 and 250), The one-, two- and three-step-ahead TS bootstrap prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the SB prediction intervals for all random error distributions studied. The third-order autoregressive process (AR(3) process) When the random error distributions are standard normal and t distributions, the one-, two- and three-step ahead SB prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals for all sample sizes. When the random error distributions are chi-squares and uniform distributions, the one-, two- and three-step ahead SB prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals for small sample sizes ( = 25 and/or 50). In case of the moderate and large sample sizes ( = 100 and 250), the one-, two- and three-step ahead TS bootstrap prediction intervals provide the coverage probability more than those of the SB prediction intervals. On average, the expected lengths of a SB prediction intervals are more than those of the TS bootstrap prediction intervals. |
